The question to ask yourself is when you are sick what is the first thing you go for. Is it some form of medicine or is it some type of natural product.
They each have their place but whenever possible I would recommend a natural solution to the problem.
The following article documents some research showing a preparation using fresh pineapple to be far superior then cough syrup.
But going to the grocery store and grabbing the first carton of pineapple juice you see is not the best way to get all of these benefits. Not only will heat used to process that juice potentially destroy the bromelain, but these prepared products are typically loaded with sugar and other unnecessary ingredients.
